Gold · Bitcoin · Comparison

People buy both to store wealth. Both have a limited supply, and both have fallen over the past year. But one is a bar you can hold and the other is an entry on a ledger. Here is how gold and bitcoin compare, in numbers.

One question we hear a lot at our counter in Tbilisi: “Should I buy gold or bitcoin?” Often it comes from people who already hold some crypto and are thinking about moving part of their savings into something physical. The same question came up again and again in the comments under Sasha Katsman’s podcast.

We sell gold, not bitcoin, so we won’t pretend to be neutral. What we can do is stick to checked figures and be upfront about where gold has its own weak spots.

01What you actually own

A gold bar is physical metal. A 100 g bar of 999.9 gold carries the refiner’s name, weight, purity and a serial number. Its value doesn’t depend on an internet connection or on any company staying in business.

Bitcoin is a digital asset with a supply capped in its code: there will never be more than 21 million coins. Gold’s supply is limited too, just differently. Mines add a little new metal each year, so the total stock grows slowly. Scarcity is a big part of the appeal of both.

The biggest difference is track record. Gold has served as money and savings for thousands of years. Bitcoin launched in 2009 and hasn’t been through anything like that test of time.

02What happened over the last year

Both set records. Both have dropped since:

Bitcoin has fallen further, close to 40% from its peak. According to Fortune it was $101,484 a year ago, so it is down 22.6% over twelve months. Gold has also come a long way off its January high, so “gold only goes up” isn’t true either. Over a short stretch, neither is a safe haven.

03How much the price swings

For gold, a 2% day is a big day. Today, 5 November, a gram on Gold.ge is up 2.01% in 24 hours at 349.56 GEL. On 31 October it was 327.44 GEL. A move of almost 7% in a week is unusual for gold.

For bitcoin, swings like that are routine, and a single day can bring much bigger ones. That is exactly what some buyers want: the chance of fast gains. It cuts both ways.

Put simply, gold moves slowly and bitcoin moves fast. If a sharp drop would keep you up at night, factor that in before you buy.

04Storage, and what can go wrong

Bitcoin is controlled by a private key. Keep it in your own wallet and lose the key, and the coins are gone for good. Keep it on an exchange, and you are trusting that exchange’s security and its willingness to let you withdraw.

Nobody can hack a gold bar, but it can be stolen the old-fashioned way. That’s why larger holdings sit in a home safe or a bank safe deposit box. It’s a cost and a chore that bitcoin doesn’t have.

05Costs of buying and selling back

A bar’s price includes a premium over the value of the gold inside it. Today that premium is 3.8% on a 100 g Britannia bar and 20.5% on a 1 g bar. The bigger the bar, the less you pay per gram.

Gold.ge buys back bars and coins that were bought from us. The price is based on the live spot price minus a margin. We don’t buy jewellery or gold bought elsewhere. For today’s buyback price, contact us.

Bitcoin can be bought or sold on an exchange in minutes, with fees that depend on the platform. That flexibility is a real advantage. Gold’s advantage is different: a bar doesn’t rely on any platform at all.

06If you’re moving a large sum

At today’s price, 100,000 GEL buys about 286 g of gold, almost three 100 g bars. For a million lari, many buyers choose 1 kg bars: they’re available on order, collected in store, and carry the lowest premium per gram. Companies can buy with an invoice and pay by bank transfer.

Plenty of investors don’t pick one. They keep a small slice in bitcoin for the upside and put the part that needs to sit quietly into gold. These are facts, not investment advice, and for a large allocation it’s worth talking to a financial adviser.

A lot of questions on this came up under Sasha Katsman’s podcast. The guest on that episode is Gold.ge’s founder, Nugzar Chachiashvili.

07Questions people ask us

Which has fallen more, gold or bitcoin?

Bitcoin. It is about 38% below its 6 October 2025 record of $126,198, while gold is about 26% below its 28 January 2026 record of $5,589.

Is gold safer than bitcoin?

Gold swings less and has no digital risk. But its price falls too, and a bar has to be kept physically safe. No asset is completely safe.

Can I pay for gold with bitcoin?

No. We sell investment gold only, bars and coins. You can pay by bank transfer, with Keepz (no commission) or by Visa/Mastercard.

Will you buy my gold back?

Yes, if the bar or coin was bought from Gold.ge. The price is based on the market price minus a margin. We don’t buy jewellery or gold bought elsewhere. Contact us for today’s price.

Do you deliver, or do I collect?

There’s no delivery. You collect your gold in store, at Galleria Tbilisi (2/4 Shota Rustaveli Ave) or Radisson Blu Iveria. Paying online locks the price at that moment.
