Gold in a pawn shop often looks cheap. What is actually on sale there is mostly 14K and 18K jewellery, the shop sets its own price, and checking the piece is up to you. Here is how to work out how much gold you are really getting, and what to check before you pay.
People sometimes ask us: “Isn’t gold cheaper at a pawn shop?” If you only look at the price per gram, it can seem that way. But a gram at a pawn shop and a gram of an investment bar are not the same thing. Pawn shops mostly sell jewellery: rings, chains and earrings that their owners did not redeem in time.
We don’t sell jewellery at all, only investment bars and coins, so we have no reason to talk pawn shops down. We just want to show you what you are paying for.
01A pawn shop gram is not a bar gram
The purity mark tells you how much of the piece is pure gold. 585 means 585 parts in 1000 are gold, so 58.5%. That is 14 karat. The rest is copper, silver and other metals that make jewellery harder. A 10 g chain marked 585 contains 5.85 g of pure gold.
Pure gold (g) = item weight × purity ÷ 1000
Example: 10 g × 585 ÷ 1000 = 5.85 g of pure gold
Now let’s put that in money. Here is what the gold inside one gram of an item is worth today, by purity:
| Purity | Pure gold content | Gold value in 1 g of item |
|---|---|---|
| 585 (14K) | 58.5% | ≈ 193.95 ₾ |
| 750 (18K) | 75% | ≈ 248.65 ₾ |
| 916.7 (22K) | 91.67% | ≈ 303.91 ₾ |
| 999.9 (24K, bar) | 99.99% | 331.53 ₾ |
Based on the gold price page on Gold.ge, 3 November 2026, 08:37 (1 g of 999.9 gold = 331.53 GEL, about 126 USD). Metal value only, no workmanship or stones.
So if a 14K ring is priced at, say, 250 GEL a gram, that is not cheap gold. The gold in it is worth about 194 GEL today; the rest is craftsmanship and the shop’s margin. That isn’t good or bad. It’s just worth knowing.

02What to check before you pay
Pawn shops usually sell items as they are. A few minutes of checking can save you a lot.
- The hallmark. 585, 750 or another number inside the ring or by the clasp. A stamp on its own proves nothing, though. Anyone can stamp a number on a fake.
- A test in front of you. Ask them to test the piece while you watch, for example with an XRF analyser. If they can’t, have a jeweller look at it before you buy.
- Weight and stones. Stones and settings count towards the weight but they are not gold. Ask what the gold alone weighs.
- Hollow or repaired pieces. A hollow chain or bracelet looks chunky but weighs little. Solder joints are sometimes a different alloy.
- A receipt. Get one that lists the item, weight, purity and price.
03Jewellery is for wearing. Bars are for saving
If you like the ring, you’ll wear it, and the price is close to the metal value, buying it from a pawn shop can be perfectly sensible. Trouble starts when people buy jewellery as savings.
When you sell jewellery, the design rarely counts. Buyers pay for the metal, after testing, at a discount, and every new buyer will want to test it again. A bar avoids all that: 999.9 purity, a known refiner’s stamp, a serial number, sealed packaging or a certificate. Our bars come from Valcambi, PAMP, Argor-Heraeus, C. Hafner, the Royal Mint, Rand Refinery and Umicore, and the price is public and updates roughly every 10 seconds.
The same goes for investment coins. Krugerrands and American Eagles are 916.7 fine, yet each one holds exactly one troy ounce of pure gold, and dealers everywhere know it.

04Same money, two options
A quick comparison. A 10 g chain in 14K holds 5.85 g of pure gold, worth about 1,939 GEL today before any workmanship. A 5 g Valcambi bar, which holds 5 g of 999.9 gold, costs 1,800.32 GEL with us.
Bars have a downside too, and we won’t hide it: the smaller the bar, the more you pay per gram. Here is today’s premium, the gap between a bar’s price and the value of the gold inside it:
| Bar | Price at Gold.ge | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| 1 g C. Hafner | 417.13 ₾ | +20.5% |
| 5 g Argor-Heraeus | 1,800.32 ₾ | +7.9% |
| 10 g C. Hafner | 3,581.07 ₾ | +7.4% |
| 100 g Britannia, Royal Mint | 34,470.98 ₾ | +3.8% |
Prices: Gold.ge, 3 November 2026, 08:37. They move with the market.
One more thing about selling later. Gold.ge buys back only the bars and coins you bought from us. The price is based on the live market (spot) price minus a margin. We don’t buy jewellery, pawn shop pieces included, or gold bought elsewhere.
05If you’re investing a larger sum
Hardly anyone spends 100,000 GEL at a pawn shop, and for good reason. At that level larger bars make more sense: the premium on 100 g is 3.8% today, and 1 kg bars are available on order and collected in store. Companies can buy on an invoice and pay by bank transfer.
Paying online locks the price at the moment you pay, and Keepz payments carry no commission. We don’t deliver: you collect your gold at Galleria Tbilisi or the Radisson Blu Iveria. Visiting from abroad works the same way. This is factual information, not investment advice.

06What people ask us most
Is gold cheaper at a pawn shop?
Per gram it can look cheaper, but most of it is 14K (585) or 18K (750) jewellery. One gram of 585 holds 0.585 g of pure gold. Compare the pure gold content, not the weight of the piece.
How can I tell if pawn shop gold is real?
A hallmark is not enough. Ask for a test in front of you, for example with an XRF analyser, or have a jeweller check it before you buy. Get a receipt showing weight and purity.
Will you buy a ring I bought at a pawn shop?
No. We don’t buy jewellery or gold bought elsewhere. We buy back only bars and coins bought from Gold.ge, at the market price minus a margin.
What is one gram of 14K gold worth?
The metal value is the price of a gram of 999.9 gold times 0.585. On 3 November at 08:37 that was about 193.95 GEL. Workmanship and stones are extra.
Can you deliver a bar, or do I collect it?
We don’t deliver. You collect bars and coins in store: Galleria Tbilisi (2/4 Shota Rustaveli Ave) or the Radisson Blu Iveria. Paying online locks the price at that moment.
