Gifts · Gold · For him

Buying a gift for a man is hard. He already has a watch, he picks his own aftershave, and gadgets date in two years. A gold coin or a small bar is different: it gets kept for decades and doesn’t lose its worth. Here’s what to choose, what it costs, and where people go wrong.

As the holidays get closer, we hear the same question at our Tbilisi counter more and more: “What can I give him that won’t end up in a drawer?” Usually it’s for a father, a husband, a godfather, a senior colleague or a business partner. Our answer is obvious: gold. But gold as a gift has its own rules.

Below we go through it with real products and real prices from our shop.

01Why gold, and not another watch

Most gifts lose value the moment they’re bought. Aftershave runs out, tech gets old, clothes don’t fit. A gold bar or coin is still the same gold in five years or twenty, and its value follows the world gold price.

To be straight with you: the gold price moves, and it can fall. So a gold gift is something for the long run, not a way to make quick money. That’s why people choose it for occasions meant to be remembered: a milestone birthday, a wedding, a new baby, a retirement.

02Bar or coin?

A bar is pure 999.9 gold. Small PAMP bars from the Fortuna and Rose lines come sealed in a CertiPAMP card that doubles as the certificate. Leave it sealed: the bar keeps better that way and looks good as a gift.

A coin has history and design: the South African Krugerrand, the American Eagle, the British Sovereign. Most modern bullion coins are 22 carat (916.7 fine) and historic ones are 900 fine. That’s not a drawback. The fine gold weight is stated exactly, and the alloy makes the coin harder wearing.

In short: for a man who likes numbers and a clean investment, give a bar. For one who loves history or collecting, give a coin.

One thing to know: the smaller the bar, the more you pay per gram. On a 1 g bar you pay roughly 20% over the value of the gold inside; on a 100 g bar it’s under 4%. That’s normal for a gift, just go in knowing it.

04If he loves history

A historic coin tells more of a story than a bar. The Nicholas II gold 10 roubles was struck at the Saint Petersburg Mint between 1897 and 1911 and holds 7.74 g of fine gold.

The British Sovereign is small and elegant, 22 carat, with 7.32 g of fine gold. For a bigger gift, people pick the American $20 Double Eagle from the 19th and early 20th century, which holds 30.09 g of fine gold.

05Worth knowing before you buy

First, it’s a valuable gift, but if it’s ever sold you won’t get the purchase price back. Gold.ge buys back bars and coins bought from us, at the live market price minus a margin. We don’t buy jewellery or gold bought elsewhere.

Second, bars and coins aren’t jewellery. They’re kept, not worn. If he’d rather have something to wear, that’s a different gift, and not one we sell.

Third, always check the fine weight and purity on the product page. Two coins of the same size can hold different amounts of gold.

06How to buy and where to collect

Choose and pay on the website. Paying online locks the price at that moment, so tomorrow’s moves don’t affect you. Keepz has no commission; cards and bank transfer work too. There’s no delivery: you collect the gift in store, at Galleria Tbilisi (2/4 Shota Rustaveli Ave) or Radisson Blu Iveria.

Companies preparing New Year gifts for partners or staff can buy with an invoice and pay by bank transfer. For an order of dozens of identical bars or coins, get in touch first.
