Which Gold Bar Size Should You Buy? From 1 Gram to 1 Kilo

1 gram, 10 grams, 100 grams or a kilo? Bar size affects the price too: a gram costs more in a small bar. We compare sizes using real prices and explain which one fits which goal.

At 29 October prices, a gram in a 1 g bar cost 21% more than in a 100 g bar, while a 20 g bar cost just 0.2% more.

01Which bar sizes are available

Investment bars are sized in grams or troy ounces: 1 oz = 31.10 g. At Gold.ge you can buy:

• Small: 1 g, 2 g, 2.5 g and 5 g.
• Medium: 10 g, 20 g, 25 g, ½ oz (15.55 g) and 1 oz (31.10 g).
• Large: 50 g and 100 g.
• For large investments: 1 kg, on order. One kilo is about 32.15 troy ounces.
• CombiBar: Valcambi’s divisible bar made of 20, 50 or 100 one-gram pieces.

The bars are made by Valcambi, PAMP, Argor-Heraeus, C. Hafner, the Royal Mint and Rand Refinery.

02Why small bars cost more per gram

A bar’s price has two parts: the market value of the gold and the premium. The premium covers minting, the serial number, the certificate packaging and transport. Every bar carries these costs, from 1 g to 100 g, but in a small bar they are spread over fewer grams. So the smaller the bar, the more you pay per gram.

The gap is widest between 1 and 5 grams. From 20 grams up, the price per gram almost evens out: 20 g, 1 oz, 50 g and 100 g bars are within 0.2% of each other.

03Example: buying 20 grams three ways

One 20 g bar is 1,471.15 ₾ cheaper than twenty small ones. The CombiBar sits in between: it costs 388.97 ₾ more than a 20 g bar but breaks into 1 g pieces when you need them.

04Which size fits which goal

• A gift: 1–5 g. An affordable amount, and the bar comes sealed in a certificate card. Here the meaning of the gift matters more than the price per gram.
• Saving step by step: 5–20 g. If you buy every month, a gram in 5 g and 10 g bars costs 13–14% less than in a 1 g bar.
• Investing: 1 oz, 50 g, 100 g. The lowest premium, and the price tracks the market most closely.
• Large investments: 1 kg or several 100 g bars. We bring in 1 kg bars on order. Companies get an invoice and can pay by bank transfer.
• Flexibility: CombiBar. A gram in the 100 × 1 g CombiBar costs only 2.2% more than in a 100 g bar, and you can split it.

05One large bar or several small ones?

A large bar is cheaper per gram, but you cannot sell part of it. Ten 10 g bars instead of one 100 g bar cost 3.9% (1,376.37 ₾) more — in return, you can sell one piece when you need cash and keep the rest.

You can also combine the two: most of the money in large bars, a smaller share in 10–20 g bars or a CombiBar.

06What to check when buying a bar

1. Fineness. An investment bar should be marked 999.9.
2. Refiner. Bars from well-known refiners are recognised in any country: Valcambi, PAMP, Argor-Heraeus, C. Hafner, the Royal Mint.
3. Serial number and card. Small bars come in a certificate card showing weight, fineness and number. Keep the card sealed.
4. Price per gram. When comparing bars of different sizes, convert the price to one gram.
