The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States. Each coin contains 31.103 grams, or exactly 1 troy ounce of pure gold. The total weight is slightly higher at 33.94 grams, as the coin also includes small amounts of silver and copper. This alloy makes the coin more durable and less prone to scratches than 24-carat gold coins. Since the American Eagle contains a full troy ounce of gold, its intrinsic value equals that of other 1 troy ounce 24-carat coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Philharmonic.
